The Anchorman actor will become part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with his own film as directed by Edgar Wright (The World’s End), which will kick-start the “Phase 3” line of films after The Avengers: Age of Ultron debuts in summer 2015.
Comic fans will recognise Ant-Man – aka Henry Pym – as a brilliant scientist who develops the ability to change his size whenever he wants. He is also noteworthy of being one of the original founding members of the Avengers in the comics.
Marvel president Kevin Feige commented on Rudd’s casting: “When Edgar Wright came to us with the idea of Paul Rudd, we felt a huge sense of relief because the first step in creating any Marvel Studios film is finding the right star. We knew early on that we had found the right person in Paul. When he not only agreed to do it but became as enthusiastic as any actor we’d ever met with about doing the work, we knew we’d found the right guy. We couldn’t be more excited for our audiences to see what he’s going to do to bring Ant-Man to life.”
Aside from featuring in the Anchorman movies – the sequel of which is out now in cinemas – Rudd has also starred in films like This Is 40; I Love You, Man; Role Models; Forgetting Sarah Marshall; Our Idiot Brother; Knocked Up and The 40-Year-Old Virgin. This will mark his debut in a major superhero movie.
Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man, starring Paul Rudd, is currently pencilled in for a July 2015 release date. Let’s hope it doesn’t shrink on the radar (sorry)…
