After a brief hiatus (meaning we’ve missed coverage of PGA, DGA and WGA ee-bafta-film-awards-rgb-pos-web-19740nominations, though expect belated news stories on those soon), Awards Feeder is back to cover the nominations of this year’s EE British Academy Film Awards, better known to you as the BAFTAs.

Gravity leads the circuit this time round with 11 nominations, including Best Film, Best Director (Alfonso Cuarón), Best Actress (Sandra Bullock), Best Original Screenplay (by Cuarón and son Jonás Cuarón) and Best British Film. In case you’re wondering about that last one, producer David Heyman is British and the sci-fi blockbuster was filmed in British studios so by all definition it counts.

Following closely behind in this morning’s announcement of BAFTA contenders were 12 Years A Slave and American Hustle, which tied with 10 nominations each. As well as also being nominated for Best Film, they each scored a nod for Best Director (Steve McQueen; David O. Russell), Best Screenplay (12 Years was Adapted; Hustle was Original) and a good few others.

The other two Best Film contenders were Paul Greengrass’ Captain Phillips (which also scored a Director nod for Greengrass and Lead and Supporting acting noms for Tom Hanks and Barkhad Abdi respectively) and Philomena, which despite a strong British presence otherwise did not fare as well as one might have expected, scoring additional nominations for lead actress Judi Dench, Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope’s adapted screenplay and Best British Film. Stephen Frears’ feel-good drama shares the latter honour with Gravity, Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, Rush, Saving Mr. Banks and The Selfish Giant.

American Hustle scored a nomination in each acting category, including Best Actor (Christian Bale), Best Actress (Amy Adams), Best Supporting Actor (Bradley Cooper) and Best Supporting Actress (Jennifer Lawrence). Bale goes up against Bruce Dern (Nebraska), Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street), Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave) and Hanks; Adams shall face competition from Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks), Bullock and Dench; meanwhile, Cooper’s opponents include Daniel Brühl (Rush), Matt Damon (Behind The Candelabra), Michael Fassbender (12 Years A Slave) and Abdi; and Lawrence must be strong against Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine), Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years A Slave), Julia Roberts (August: Osage County) and Oprah Winfrey (The Butler).

Earlier this week, EE announced the five young performers who are in the running for this year’s Rising Star Award. The prize, which has been won in the past by James McAvoy, Shia LaBeouf, Noel Clarke, Kristen Stewart, Tom Hardy and Juno Temple, celebrates an up-and-coming actor’s strong line of work and looks ahead to how they might be in the future. This year’s nominations are Dane DeHaan (The Place Beyond The Pines), George MacKay (Sunshine on Leith), Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years A Slave), Will Poulter (We’re The Millers) and Léa Seydoux (Blue Is The Warmest Colour). It is the only award that the public can vote for, and all you lucky UK voters (sorry international readers, it’s UK only) can cast your vote on the EE website here.
