WHAT’S IT ABOUT?
It’s the summer of 1979, and in Thüringen, East Germany, the Strelzyk and Wetzel families long to escape to the West. Together, they devise a plan that sees them constructing a homemade hot-air balloon, which they intend to use to leave their old lives behind and start new ones in West Germany – only for them to soon be drawn into a fierce battle for survival…
